Unrequited Love
The Story
Might just be the beginning of something greater than ourselves
If you're here, there's a chance this episode found you before you found it. Maybe you're thinking about someone you never got to call yours. Maybe you're trying to move on, or maybe you're just tired of pretending you're over it. Whatever part you're here, I'm glad you stayed. This isn't a podcast that's going to tell you to let go. It doesn't go into promise that time knows everything. This is simply a place for the conversations we have with ourselves when everyone else has gone to sleep. The thoughts we never send, the messages we never type, the goodbyes we never get to say.
So let's talk about unrecrated love. I don't think we talk about unrecrated love honestly enough. Most people describe it as loving someone who doesn't love you back. I don't think that's quite right. Because if you've ever been there, you know the hardest part isn't that they don't love you, it's that nothing bad ever happened. There was no betrayal, no goodbye, no traumatic ending, Just two people living completely different stories. You spend weeks, months, sometimes years learning someone without them ever realising they're being learnt.
You notice the way they laugh before anyone else does. You know which songs they never finish. You know when something's wrong because they're quieter than usual. You notice the little things, the things nobody writes down, the things that makes a person a person. And one day you realise something terrifying. You know more about them than they'll probably ever know about you. That's when it starts hurting. Because unrequited love isn't loud. It's painfully quiet. It's sitting next to someone and pretending your heartbeat isn't changing every time they look at you.
It's rewriting a text message five times only to send OK. It's celebrating the smallest moments because they're all you have. They smiled at me today. They remembered my name. They asked how how I was. To everyone else, those are ordinary moments. To you, they become reasons to keep hoping. Hope is strange, isn't it? People talk about hope like it's always a beautiful thing. Sometimes hope is what keeps you from moving on. You convince yourself they're just confused. Maybe the timing is wrong. Maybe one day they'll see you the way you see them.
Maybe, maybe, just maybe. It's amazing how one word can build an entire future and then, without meaning to, they tell you about someone else. The way their face lights up, the way they can't stop smiling, the excitement in their voice. You smile too. You even ask questions. Not because you're okay. Because you love them enough to let them be happy, even if that happiness has nothing to do with you. I think that's the cruelest part. If you don't get to be angry, they never lied to you. They never promised forever.
They never asked you to wait. They were simply existing, and somehow you turned their kindness into a love story. So how do you blame them, yourself, or hope nobody teaches you that you can crave something that never existed. We can miss conversations you never had. We can mourn anniversaries that were never celebrated. We can imagine memories so vividly that losing them feels real. People think heartbreak only comes after love. I don't. I think sometimes heartbreak comes after possibility, after imagining what could happen for so long that your imagination starts feeling like memory.
Eventually you stop checking your film. You stop creating imaginary conversations in your head. You stop wondering what would have happened if you just said something sooner. Not because you stopped loving them, but because you finally realized love isn't supposed to be a place where only one person lives. And maybe that's what healing actually is. Not forgetting them, not pretending they never mattered. Just accepting that some people enter your life only to teach your heart what it is capable of feeling.
Maybe they were never meant to stay. Maybe they were only meant to show you that one day, when someone does choose you, you'll know exactly how precious their choice really is. So if you're listening to this while thinking about someone who will probably never know what they meant to you, I hope you don't hate yourself for loving them. Loving someone is embarrassing. It's human. Just don't spend your whole life waiting outside the door that was never yours to to knock on. There is someone somewhere, somewhere who won't make you wonder if you're enough.
One day love won't feel like guessing. It'll feel like coming home. Thank you for listening, take care of your heart. I'll meet you again, probably when there's something else we actually need to talk about in case we don't meet again. Good morning, good evening and good night.
